In this third expedition to break a world record, we finally did it. We declared a distance of 408 km with 3 declared turn points. Though never done before, we knew this was achievable. All 6 of us tried everyday. On the fifth attempt, @sebosimobenz made it, cheered on by the whole team. The first 10 minutes of a flight are decisive. Make a mistake and you might get hurt and your flight is over. You’re incredibly focused when you decide it’s the right moment to launch your golfer and let the strong wind slam into it. Once you have the wind overhead, the tow cable becomes your friend. It’s pulling with constant pressure, letting you fight the wind until your wing is fully open and you blast into the sky.

Final glide on a 472km cross-country flight over the Brazilian Sertao. I started my final at 16:54, more than an hour before landing. I was at 3000m altitude, hoping to glide another 60-70km before landing just before dark. Dusk is short in the tropics. I knew the sun would set at 17:38, and I’d still have some light before things got pitch black after 18:00. It all worked out nicely until about 17:45 when I started to rise in glass off conditions about 900 m above ground. Time was running out before visibility would drop below critical. Out here, landable fields are small and rare, and power lines hard to see in low light conditions. Pushing speedbar I raced to touch down not a minute too early at 18:00.
